Organization History
The Columbus Literacy Council (the Council) began in 1970 when Church Women United organized and trained literacy volunteers to assist Asian immigrants. The mission is a simple one:
The Columbus Literacy Council is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to increasing the level of functional literacy of adults in central Ohio through teaching the English language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The intervening years have seen the Council expand to provide more than 77,000 instructional hours to adults representing over 36 different ethnic groups annually, making the Council the largest private provider of adult literacy services in Central Ohio.
